Fashion Was Introduced To Me As A Young Lad…

Story submitted by Lonnie Hawkins

‘Fashion was introduced to me as a young lad growing up in the city of dreams, New York City. Seeing so many different styles throughout the city, I gravitated to fashion as an expression of myself, being inspired by the 1920′s, Harlem Renaissance, & the “new Jazz era.”

I brought my love of jazz with me when I moved down South and instantly became infatuated by Charleston’s jazz age. The laid back atmosphere, southern charm & hospitality put the finishing touch on my personal style aesthetic. This became my personal expression, which is now becoming recognized as South of York.

South Of York is a mixture of my style intertwined with New York ( Harlem Renaissance) & the Carolina (Charleston Jazz Age). That’s how you get South Of York.’

I Have Taken Greater Pride In My Outward Appearance…

Story submitted by Keith Nixon

‘I’ve recently committed to becoming more physically fit and as a result have taken greater pride in my outward appearance. I try to dress fashionably while shopping reasonably, being that I am a college student.

Most of my clothing I have owned for years; however, my clothing now fits better being that I am in better shape. Most of my recent purchases have come from various thrift stores or H&M. I am happy with my progress and I am excited to share with others.

As a Mechanical Engineering major heading into my senior year I have experienced exponential growth and maturity since graduating high school and entering college. With this growth and maturity has come a certain pride in image.

I now understand the significance of “looking the part.” First impressions can be the determining factor in our future endeavors and it is because of this that I have taken the necessary measures to insure I always leave the best first impression possible.'

'Clothing is a means of expression; a reflection of who we are. I strive to be a gentleman, a renaissance man, one who readily adapts & excels in any situation therefore, my clothing should reflect this. I aim to be versatile in my wardrobe. I prefer to make a statement with a certain effortlessness and subtlety that allows me to stand out with ease.

My wardrobe consists of mostly basics that I can tailor to the occasion. A hoodie or white t-shirt and jeans are my go to’s. Flannels are staples in my closet because of their
versatility. They add a nice flare to my everyday outfits regardless of season.

I’m a sucker for a nice blazer paired with slim khakis, but a well-fitting suit is a must for every man. I prefer navy or gray because they are a bit more versatile than black. I have a love affair with ties, but I have experimented with the “air tie” a bit recently. Because I am a college student, thrifting is my main means of shopping; however, I occasionally visit various retailers such as H&M, Aldo, and Forever 21.

In all, I have a new appreciation for what it means to be “fashionable.” It’s not about who you’re wearing or how much it costs, it’s about how you wear it. What you wear should be a reflection of who you are.

I want my personal wardrobe to exude confidence and a particular image consciousness that leaves a lasting first impression.’
