Denny X Scotch & Soda

Scotch & Soda

Denny X Scotch & Soda, the 7th illustration in the Aesthetic Guide for the Dapper Man.

Denny is one of the most versatile dressers I have ever met. He pulls together looks from the vintage store where he works like an artist. He suits up like a Dali painting. And he's always wearing a hat. The man just looks good in a hat.

At PROJECT Show I had the honor of painting Denny wearing Scotch & Soda. He pulled three jackets for three very different aesthetics. See those paintings on the Daily Fashion.

Now follow along in this final Denny X Scotch & Soda painting.

The Process

Rene Magritte was a major influence for this illustration.

I needed to find a way to complement Denny's gravity defying acrobatic photographs with the eclectic design choices of Scotch and Soda. Magritte's 'Son of Man' and 'Golconda' set the tone.

Tumi X Troy

Tumi X Troy, the fourth illustration in the Aesthetic Guide for the Dapper Man.

Marcus Troy was an early supporter of my work, especially after I contacted him for a fashion portrait illustration. see it here. It was through Marcus that I got my first quality duffel, a Tumi.

And now we have come full circle. Marcus Troy featured in the Tumi illustration for AG4DM.

The Process

Tumi is a global company. They are known around the world for their quality and durability. Having visited the studio and seen their range of product I was very impressed with how they integrate their product lines. The way that a duffel might match a travel case in aesthetic and efficiency.

Marcus is known for many things but two ways he might oft be recognized is his wearing black, and wearing Goro jewelry. These two factors were essential in bringing out the character of the man.

Above are the initial sketches for the Tumi X Troy illustration. They involved some crazy ideas but I eventually mellowed out to what you see below.

AG4DM, Perry Ellis and Kirk Chambers

The second illustration in the Aesthetic Guide for the Dapper Man takes the classic American brand Perry Ellis styled on Kirk, one of the brothers behind Brothers and Craft.

The Drawing

Perry Ellis Kirk Chambers Drawing Layout

Drawing may be the most important step in the painting process. It lays the ground work for what will happen next. The drawing sets the proper boundaries for success.

Now I know where colors will go, where details will go, where values will go. Even if things change I at least have given myself a 'road-map' for success. I have given myself courage to complete the daunting journey of painting.

I laugh when I look at this first step in the drawing. The feet are comically large. After about 5 tries to get the proper proportions I was finally able to lay in the values and details.

Color Studies

Color is my Achilles Heel. It has consistently been the Resistance that works to destroy my art.

Testing is the foil to my foible.

Testing and experimenting is highly valuable. It's like cooking a meal for the first time. You have to taste it as you go. Add a bit more salt. Spritz a bit of pepper. That is where the Perry Ellis illustration is right now. In a testing phase.

Let me know what your favorite background color option?

The Rough

I'm loving the relative simplicity of this illustration so far. The background is made up of simple, geometric shapes, all at right angles. It shoves all of the focus on the figure.

This way we get to focus on Kirk and the amazing Perry Ellis clothing.
