My absolute favorite project from 2016. Sunflowerman.Com/the-illustrator. It was amazing to work with so many people to put together this piece, @ruthmeharg, @leigh.ann.cobb.photo, @maxwelharmon, @albino____rhino, @aldeacoffee and all the brands that believed enough to sponsor (find them on the site). I'm excited for the projects ahead in 2017. Together with a few collaborators I am putting out something altogether new in menswear. First reveal of 'Passers-By' for my show at @cassiopeecafe on August 3. 11x15" watercolor on watercolor paper. The story centers around one of my favorite watches, the @brewwatches HP-1 (I'm literally wearing it right now. irl). Floating away behind our main character is a @bmw something or other (I dont really care much for cars which may be why I obscured it, can't say for sure. @zhen_zhu_nai_cha_sheh_sheh will know which one it is) the light is flashing yellow but is that for our BMW friend? NYC grounds the scene. Our view is a sharp angle which only shows a few buildings, but that's all you can really ever see at street level in NYC. You may have almost missed it but a mug of coffee is hovering above our main character's right hand. I love coffee and that was one of the main catalysts for his painting's creation. The hat is a @borsalino_world, I have had a bit of an obsession with the brand though I'm currently delving into the hand made hats of American craftspeople (expect to see some of those starting to pop up in my work). @shibumifirenze is the inspiration for the tie. The suit is a Sunflowerman design. I'm all about greys. Finally we come to the passers-by, for whom the painting is titled. They are no one in particular, people from my imagination really. It's not physically difficult, it's not morally difficult, it's not even the hard work- it's the existential crisis. What if what I make today is not as good as what I made yesterday? What if the people don't like it? What if I don't like it? But drawing and painting is the one thing in the world that I am confident about, all the way down to my core being. My subconscious is confident in my ability. And my subconscious ruins me all the time in public. It ruined in me sports, in basketball and tennis and in public speaking I am ruined. I swear I could just pee my pants at any moment because, even though my brain is ready and confident, my subconscious is a saboteur. But when it comes to painting I am all in, fully capable at home and in the public eye. I can entertain a crowd. So what happens if this one thing I am able to openly and confidently accomplish in the world suddenly breaks? Then I'm ruined. And this is the crises. Do I paint and discover I'm no longer capable, or do I continue to test the new day? #sunflowerman
