‘My First Glimpse Into Fashion Came From My Basketball Playing Days…’

‘My first glimpse into fashion came from my basketball playing days when sneakers were everything – especially growing up with Jordan’s and Penny’s.  That ‘hobby’ definitely carried with me from a young age up until my college years. Midway through undergrad I started really gravitating towards tailored threads.  It may have been the maturing or living in NYC – who knows, but it was a drastic change in my life.'

'I was always exposed to well dressed men in my life growing up, but never really paid attention to it until I hit 20.  My pops wears a suit everyday to work and always put an emphasis on buying quality over quantity.  He really has nailed that down when I look at his closet and keeping things to a minimal.  Also, my mom has always showed me old pictures of well-dressed relatives in Italy from the 30′s, 40′s, 50′s, etc, but now I look at those pictures in a completely different way – taking it in as inspiration.

Now I have started developing my own style through trial and error.  I now am the vision behind SuaveByNature.tumblr.com and also am the Style Editor at HenryAstonBespoke.co.uk. Like many, I began to hone in on this menswear thing through the internet and soon developed a moderately successful blog from an attempt to learn and find inspiration. I have learned a lot through my fellow bloggers and the men of the menswear world, and have really begun to build my own personal style.  Whether its the Italian sprezz, or jeans and a t-shirt, I am starting to figure out what’s ‘me’, but I’m still young and still exploring. Menswear has definitely become much more then the clothes and the details, but rather the wonderful people and adventure that I have come across.’

‘I’m Changing As A Person While On This Path…’

Story submitted by Damien Currano

‘My journey into men’s fashion began just last year. I work in the video game industry at a company called Blizzard Entertainment where the standard daily attire generally consists of oversized shorts or loose fitting jeans and an old gaming related t-shirt. And for many years I too followed that same style scheme. Having been with the company for almost 8 years now and having had the opportunity to travel to other countries, work with dozens of amazingly talented people and be a part of major game launches, it would be an understatement to say that I love it here.'

'All that said, as amazing as it is to work in this industry with such talented and passionate people, in my experience our culture is very opposed to what is generally referred to as anything “corporate”, which in terms of a dress code means that you can wear whatever you want because we’re opposed to wearing suits or any sort of business wear. Now while I am more than in favor of having a free dress code to wear whatever you like, the general opposition to dressing outside of what we’re comfortable with typically means that most people stick to very casually. Which again, is how I myself dressed for as long as I can remember.

That is until one day I was inspired by a man I know who helped to show me that wearing a tie doesn’t just mean you’re a ‘corporate suit’. Gradually I’ve expanded my horizons through tons and tons of research, fashion/style blogs, social media and now take full pride in what I wear and how I present myself. Not only that but in many ways it’s been another creative outlet and of course an expression of who I am and how I’m changing as a person while on this path to self-discovery and elevated personal confidence, which is something that I’ve struggled with for most of my life.

The general attire at my office may not have changed despite the fact that I have, but I feel like I’ve got enough social capital to burn and I don’t mind being seen as someone who doesn’t mind deviating from the standard, just because it’s how everyone else dresses.

Given that I’m still so relatively new to fashion, I can’t wait to see what my closet looks like in another year or so.’

‘When I Moved From Boston To New York For School I Thought It Would Be A Great Opportunity…’

‘I always wanted to stand and express my uniqueness through my style and art. Over the years my style has evolved immensely. My style now can best be described as a melting pot of style. I draw inspiration from urban culture, bespoke, vintage, and ethnic backgrounds.

In regards to fashion I always wanted to stand out and be unique, and I was very artistic growing up constantly watching cartoons and movies always interested in the different outfits that were worn. When I moved from Boston to New York for School I thought it would be a great opportunity to expand my fashion sense. I drew inspiration from my friends that were really into fashion, and on the scene, along with the NYC lifestyle, and from there I came into my own.'

'Currently I own my own clothing line ‘First Flight NYC’, and our goal is to inspire and drive entrepreneurs and dreamers to pursue their dreams, and come into their own just as we have. Every time I step out what I wear says is a declaration of where I was, where I’m going, and who I am.’
