Cafe Gilli sits on the Piazza della Repubblica, soaking in the sounds of children's laughter on the carousel, the exuberance of musical performers and the hum of the shifting crowds.

Tucked away in a nook I was struck by the elegance of Angelique Noir and Guillaume Bo. We were meeting for drinks, a favorite activity of mine. I, of course, had an espresso. I mean, this is Italy after all. Both Angelique and Guillaume took tea for the evening. Establishing even further the elegance of their pairing.

Surely there was a time where Guillaume and I had our digital wires cross, but I do not recall. This was our first meeting as actual humans. I had reached out to do an interview and portrait of Guillaume by email but he deferred to human conversation rather than a digital exchange. Thus I found myself sitting at Gilli, in conversation with two amazing people, shamed by my inability to match in elegance.

This, if you haven't yet noticed is a departure from the usual format- question and answer. I didn't ask any of the usual questions, even one of my favorites. You know, the one about dragons...

But I did learn a few things that I will share here. A few tidbits of insight into the man, Guillaume Bo.

1- Gui loves Coke. That's right, Coca Cola. Don't give him coffee, don't give him wine, give him a Coke.

2- In another life, years past, Gui was a DJ and producer.

3- Born in Montreal, Gui is French-Canadian and has lived in both Canada and France. And New York and San Fransisco and, well just ask where he hasn't lived.

4- Bring up a moment in history and you'll have a conversation with Guillaume. He is a man who loves to discover the breadth and depth of his favorite subjects (including Coca Cola).

Has one piece of art, literature or music helped shape who you are today?

When I was about 16 years old I developed a liking for those classic crooner tunes like those by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, and even modern artists like Michael Bublé. These musicians and the music they made held my attention for years until my liking of their music grew into an intrigue of the lifestyle surrounding it. This inspired me in both my dress and hobbies during my free time. From my more classic menswear-inspired wardrobe, to my love of cigars and fine spirits. Their music did and continues to influence my life every day.

What does your favorite article of clothing say about you?

My favorite piece of clothing is something that makes it into every single one of my outfits every single day. It is my signet ring, worn on my right hand's ring finger. It is sterling silver with a black onyx at its center, and was a gift from my mother years ago. As far as what it says about me, aside from being an incredibly dope looking ring, it reminds anyone who knows me about how much my mother and by extension, my family mean to me. Growing up I learned from my mother that family is one of the most important things in this life, and I am reminded of that each time I put on my ring in the morning. This ring says that above almost all else I am very family oriented at heart and take things of that matter very seriously.

I’d love to go to Japan. My dream is to venture through Shabuya and take in all the food, style, art & menswear.

If you could only have one pair of shoes, what color would they be?
Snuff Brown Suede

Podcasts or audiobooks?
Podcasts. I really only listen to one regularly – Monocle 24: The Entrepreneurs. I’m thinking of starting my own soon called Precision Notes

Extroverted or Introverted?
Extroverted, with some introverted tendencies.

If you were a dragon, what would you hoard?
Maybe cashmere. So that when I’m laying atop of it, there’s a highly level of comfort. If not that, gold!

Tell us about one person who made an impact on your life.

My mom, Jacqueline Peele. She passed away when I was 11 years old, but, the time we spent together was filled with life lessons. She was also one of the most stylish people that I personally had the pleasure of knowing. One of the biggest lessons are learned from her was about working hard without the expectation of being recognized.

Tell us about one place that made an impact on your life.

North Philadelphia had the greatest impact on my life. I’d love to say that attending Central High School or Ursinus College was that one place that impacted my life the most, but, growing up North Philly had the greatest impact. There’s a hustler’s mentality that can only be honed there that I’ve taken into every situation and opportunity that has come my way.

Do you prefer to learn from other's mistakes, or make your own mistakes?

I prefer to make my own mistakes. This isn’t to say I go blindly into situations where people have trotted, not knowing of what went wrong for them. But, there’s an understanding that my way could be the solution to a problem.

This question is interesting... Many things in my mind..., for example, to found an art gallery or to be a "mecenate" (patron of art)! The art and beauty in every form, especially in this epoch, needs to be protected and supported.

If you were a dragon, what would you hoard?
I would hoard first-edition books and original works from early philosophers and great minds (if they even exist)! I would love to have the original pages of Andreas Vesalius's de humani corporis fabrica or from any of Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks.

Tell us about one place that has made an impact on your life.

Detroit. There is much to say about this city. In particular, the city has provided me an uncanny support system towards achieving everything I have worked towards, from academics to art. I owe all my future efforts and endeavors back to this place; there are many problems to be solved still. I would like to target homelessness. No matter where in Detroit you are, you will come across one or two people who have ended up with the short end of the stick. I can even name a few by first name as well as describe the physical characteristics of the same few that reside at the corners of the expressway intersection. It is not their faults; our humanity has allowed it to occur. Nevertheless, if we have allowed it, we can easily solve it. I have a goal of one day ending it. It may not be in the next 5 or 10 years, but one day we will witness great change. I am unaware of what this first stimulus will be, but I have been working on a few ideas to make a little dent. I believe that the overall impact is a realization that all the opportunity I have been given in Detroit is a simply fate revealing the work my community and I still have to accomplish here.

Has one piece of art, literature, or music helped shape you are today?

Yes, there have been many, especially Alex Grey's works. However, the most important piece of art that has shaped me is this three-dimensional portrait of Mother Theresa holding a sick child that hangs in my mother's office. As a child, it was merely a quite surreal art piece. You can feel her hands and the expression in her eyes. As I have gotten older, I think about the work more often due to one of her prayers that I hold close to heart called "Do It Anyway." I am not Catholic; however, her words hold extremely high value to me. Just the phrase, "Do it anyway," has the ability to eliminate all fear and self-doubt. My love for the artwork & this prayer have orchestrated in me a strong willpower to accomplish as much as I can solely to better the world around me, no matter the medium - fashion, art, medicine, etc. This is why to this day I consider one of my heroes to be Mother Theresa. Each time I picture the art in my mind, I always feel a few degrees closer to her and enter a very peaceful state of mind.

Where is home for you?
Italy….but in general home is where my heart beats: so in my Hometown but Milan definitely became my second home.

If you could only have one pair of shoes, what color would they be?
White if sneakers, dark brown if derby

Podcasts or audiobooks?
P
odcasts…so comfortable

Extroverted or Introverted?
Extroverted as me...

If you were a dragon, what would you hoard?
Ahahahahahah…..I would say food in case of possible famine

Tell us about one place that has made an impact on your life.

Two places for different reasons: working side and playful side (all of us should have these two sides) Disneyland in Paris because it leaves you the hope through which you can believe in the fairytale and dreams. New York because it’s an incredible city in which if you are smart you can touch with your hands the real possibility you can do..often there dreams come true!

Has one piece of art, literature or music helped shape who you are today?

Probably yes..not one in the specific but art, in general, helped me and all the Italians…as you know we are totally full of art and beauty in our country..we are surrounded by it from north to south in different shapes and probably this helped us to build up from our birth a sort of sense of beauty so extra-developed

If you had to choose a different career, what would you be doing?

If I was able to sing, I wanted to be a singer or a guitarist because nothing like a great singer or guitarist can transmit emotions in depth..with the music you can reach the heart of the people and you can make feel better people…and the most important thing??? music is universal and democratic: for rich and for poor…no social stairs

Where is home for you?
Right now Brooklyn is where I spend the most time.

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
I am looking forward to our upcoming trip to Biarritz, France for work. I always wanted to surf there after seeing it in Surfer Magazine in the 70's.

If you could only have one pair of shoes, what color would they be?
My favorite shoes right now are Doc Martens Monkey Boots.

Podcasts or audiobooks?
Henry Rollins on KCRW.

Extroverted or Introverted?
Both. Sometimes a balance between the two.

If you were a dragon, what would you hoard?
Native American jewelry. Can't get enough.

Tell us about one person who made an impact on your life.

My Grandfather who was from Austria and was a total DYI person. We built Volkswagen motors together. He took me to Baja California on numerous camping trips from the early 1970's. We went out on fishing boats and I surfed there too. He got me out of the LA suburbs and into nature at an early age.

What does your favorite article of clothing say about you?

Any piece that is Southwest inspired that I own. It reflects a part of my life I spent building my studio off the grid in Taos New Mexico for two summers with a gas generator and some hand power tools.

Has one piece of art, literature or music helped shape who you are today?

The British band Wire inspired me to learn guitar and start my first band in 1979. The art of the Neo- German Expressionists of the 80's got me to go to art school. The novel Brave New World.

If you had to choose a different career, what would you be doing?

I used to write a lot of computer based music with the idea of being a producer or dj. I went to art school at Cal Arts in California and got my BA in fine art. But doing late nights and gigging seemed to be a bit of a taxing lifestyle. I also tried producing some hip hop artists back in California. I play my guitar every day.

Sunny Los Angeles California!

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
Florence Italy to meet with so many of the friends I have made there

If you could only have one pair of shoes, what color would they be?
It would definitely be a dark brown

Podcasts or audiobooks?
Podcasts. Absolutely love them!

Extroverted or Introverted?
Definitely extrovert. Interesting enough, I have a twin brother who is more of an introvert.

If you were a dragon, what would you hoard?
I would hoard all my friend and keep them hostage to keep me company lol. Nothing is more valuable than the friendships you make.

Tell us about one place that has made an impact on your life.

I would say Japan. The county has a history and culture. I have never been to a country where so much tradition is upheld and practiced yet so much future technology is invented and embraced. So much conflict in that and I find it so fascinating!

What does your favorite article of clothing say about you?

A lot of the pieces I have are very bold in their cut which. I have a very confident personality and I think that it portrays that very much

Has one piece of art, literature or music helped shape who you are today?

The Pyramids of Egypt. I was born in Egypt and nothing is more beautiful then when you stand in front of them. To see something that big and last so many years only makes you realize how short of a time we have been alive and how many eyes may have seen them throughout history. Makes you feel small in the big scheme of things!

If you had to choose a different career, what would you be doing?

I think I would definitely be involved in menswear in one way or another. Many people think I am involved in menswear or have my own line but nothing could be farther from the truth. I have made a lot of friends in the industry so I have a few people in mind who I would love to collaborate in the future with.

I grew up cultivating a love for hats. For me, it was more than an accessory, it was the piece that would complete my entire outfit. When I first moved to the states, I was introduced to a new world curated by Nick Fouquet. With panache, he had taken hat making to a new magnitude. When I visited his Atelier in Los Angeles, it felt like I had found my true paradise.  The fact that he is able to connect his life story, travels and much more with his craft is what makes him standout and stand alone as an artist. I can recognize his work from miles away.

Has one piece of art, literature or music helped shape who you are today?

I listen to a lot of Bal-musette (french contemporary Classical music). It evokes so much emotion in me and helps me focus. "La Valse d'Amelie (Orchestre)" is my favorite composition by Yann Tiersen. It proves that a melody without lyrics can help liberate your mind and put it to good use.

Where is home for you?
Home is where you feel good just being yourself. I mean, you don’t need anything else.

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
Cuba. Wish I could lie in the sun, with my beloved cigars. I wish I’d smoke and then read all Hemingway’s novels while listening to Compay Segundo’s songs.

If you could only have one pair of shoes, what color would they be?
Brown, definitely. I think it’s the most versatile

Podcasts or audiobooks?
Despite I love reading very much, I’d say audiobooks especially during long train trips. I love books dealing with oriental or Zen Philosophy. They’re relaxing and really inspiring. They get me to important questions about my life, encouraging deeper reflections anytime. According to a famous quote, The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts. No other words are needed.

Extroverted or Introverted?
Both. They’re opposite sides of the same man. I’m outgoing, cheerful like many Italians are but at the same time I spend time alone contemplating, meditating. So, it’s impossible to say which mood prevails.

Who Inspires you?

I’ve always been told to stay humble and kind. As I grow older, I find it’s the best advice I ever got. Being a down to earth man is a practical attitude, the first step to fly higher. I think about it whenever I meet refined people. They’re elegant but their manners are not pretentious, not affected at all. Those are the men and the women that inspire me. Not just for aesthetic reasons.

Tell us about one place that made an impact on your life.

Naples is undoubtedly the place that made a great impact on my life. This city is contagious, the air is filled with people’s creativity that helps develop a kind of positive attitude that gets actually real. Nothing is impossible, all problems can be solved. It’s absolutely a wonderful place. There are many pieces of art and craftsmanship is still real. Needless to say, Naples is home to best Italian tailors.

What does your favorite article of clothing say about you?

Doublebreasted blue blazer with golden button. It’s the quintessence of male elegance. I love wearing it in summertime or during the winter. White trousers with a blue blazer are a classic on summer days, while I’d match up it with grey trousers on colder days.

If you had to choose a different career, what would you be doing?

As a child, I wanted to be a Formula One Pilot. I grew up amongst cars, spending much time daydreaming about speed and races.

What are you most proud of in your own life?

My job, definitely. I’m building up my future and I’m incredibly happy with that.

Has one piece of art, literature or music helped shape who you are today?

I was always an avid reader growing up, and really fell into a sense of wonder when I read the works from Hermann Hesse.  I had been recommended by a friend to read something by him and I picked up the only book I saw available, at the bookstore: The Glass Bead Game. This book was Hesse's last and was the culmination of his work, encapsulating all of his key themes into one brilliant work.  I've read this book probably 4 times now and it never gets old to me and has truly shaped me to become a person of understanding, compassion and creativity.

Do you prefer to learn from other's mistakes, or make your own mistakes?

I am an experiential learner.  I am one of those people that somebody can explain from a distance what to do, but until I actually do what I need, it's just a bunch of words.  I need to paint the picture together and then I can complete the task.  I've always learned this way, and I learn quickly, but this element also falls with my mistakes.  I could have someone bark at me what I'm doing wrong, or what to avoid, but until I experience the failure or the mistake, I can't allow myself to believe that I made one.  But because of this, I push further than I should, which gives me the ability to know more than the last person.  I don't believe in mistakes (and I've made plenty), but I believe that the errors we make continue to educate and define us, and it is only from experiencing our own mistakes that we can truly learn a thing.
