Angel Bespoke, the sixth illustration in the Aesthetic Guide for the Dapper Man.

Angel Ramos of

As Personalities go, Angel's is didactic and inspiring. Lauded by Esquire Magazine in 2010 as their 'Best Dressed Real Man of America,' and ever present on social sites such as Tumblr and Instagram- especially as a 'peacock of Pitti.'

If you know Angel at all you can read the story of his style in this fashion illustration. If you don't know him then this is a good lesson in modern menswear.

The Painting

This Menswear Illustration of Angel began with a simple phone call. Angel was gracious enough to take some time out of his day to share a bit about himself.

I learned about his passion for cigars, specifically La Gloria Cubana. He shared his love for the movie 'Once Upon A Time In America,' Tortoise Shell glasses and his signature velvet shoes.

Capturing his eclectic Sprezzatura style and his hands-in-jacket-pocket contrapposto were essential in telling the story of Angel Ramos.

The Process

I prefer to start each Personality illustration with a conversation. The conversation reveals intonation in speech, command of language, confidence and passion. Quirks are sussed out and personal affectations are recorded.

From the conversation I am able to develop a series of sketches and drawings to direct the illustration. They begin to ask the questions that need answering.
How will he be standing?
What will he be wearing?
How will he be wearing it?
Where do the shadows lie?
What should be left out?

What do you think of this illustration? Does it tell a story? What is it missing? Do you love it?
